WHAT IS IT?
A Thermal Imager detects and creates images of infrared energy (heat).
All objects on earth emit infrared heat. The higher the surface temperature is, the more infrared energy it gives off, however, all materials emit infrared energy differently. Some things give off their infrared energy very well, while others do not.
A trained thermographer knows how to deal with the different materials, understands the principles of heat transfer and can analyze temperature variances in the infrared image.
WHY USE IT?
Thermography can detect various problems, such as moisture behind a wall, air leakage through windows, missing or damaged insulation, problems with mechanical or electrical equipment, structural issues such as missing studs in the walls, and other things that are undetectable to the naked eye.
An infrared camera allows you to detect very small differences in temperature of the surface. Once these differences are detected and analyzed, we know if it is normal or if it could possibly be the beginning of a major problem.
Look at the left picture below: It is easy to determine what the object is, but note the colour differences. This picture depicts a very obvious colour differential and you can easily see where the heat is coming from. This is an obvious example but does give you the idea of how the camera detects heat.
Now look at the picture to the right: This image is showing temperature changes within the walls. What you would normally not see with the naked eye, the thermal imaging camera can show us a few different things. You can easily see where the studs are because they are a different temperature than the insulation. You can also see that there is a dark spot at the top of the wall in the middle. This is actually a section of wall where the insulation is missing!
WHEN WOULD YOU USE IT?
Imagine seeing moisture sources in the walls or ceilings before damage occurs!
Would you like to lower your heating costs but don’t know where to start?
You can learn a lot when you get a thermal imaging inspection done.
Perhaps you just want 1 specific area analysed because you have noticed a problem but do not know the cause. An Investigative Inspection might be your answer.
